Transport Action BC members have strongly endorsed the
preservation of the Granville Street Transit Mall at recent
meetings. Benefits of the Mall include faster, more comfortable
bus service; air unfouled by vehicle exhaust; and a green, quiet
atmosphere. Vacant lots on the Mall are the result of development
plans thwarted by the recession and not a lack of automobile
traffic.
Robson Street, between Howe and Hornby, was also designed as a
two lane transit mall as part of the Robson Square complex.
Unfortunately, this block was opened to general traffic and is
now a major bottleneck. Transport Action BC strongly favours the
return of this block to transit-only status in accordance with
regional and municipal goals of giving public transit a higher
priority than the private automobile.
