Special Notice:
The national parent organization of Transport 2000 BC has announced that they now have a new name.
Canada’s national voice for sustainable public transportation has a new name, “Transport Action Canada”. It replaces “Transport 2000 Canada” which has been in use since the organization’s founding in 1976. “Our voice has been heard through our national and regional organizations on all matters affecting public transportation, by all modes, in all parts of the country,” said David Jeanes, president of Transport Action Canada.
Transport 2000 BC is in the process of changing our name. We will announce the results shortly.

Olympic Line Sneak Peek
Transport 2000 BC got a chance to ride the new "Olympic Line" streetcars on Saturday Jan 15th. A group of us rode the new Bombardier streetcars that are being borrowed from the City of Brussels, Belgium for two months. We did a round trip from the Olympic village to Granville Island station, where we got off to take some pictures. Workers were still putting the finishing touches to the platforms. The ride was very smooth and quickly accelerated up to the maximum speed of 50 kp/h. The streetcars are capable of 70 km/h, but the track isn't long enough to get up to full speed.
The public grand opening is next week Thursday Jan 21. It will be open for free rides for two months, and then the trams will be returned to Belgium. Let the City of Vancouver, TransLink, and the media know that you want this pilot project to be turned into a permanent fixture.
More about the streetcars on Bombardier's site.

About to roll.

At Granville Island station which is still under construction.

Looking towards the Granville bridge in background. Note the platform extension strips. This is because the platforms are built for North American standard streetcar widths. The Belgian car is narrower.

Check out the update to our news page. Last updated Jan 31, 2010. In the near future Transport 2000 BC will replace our news page with a blog site for current news updates. Watch for it soon.

Transport 2000 BC is very actively looking into transportation issues, creating and expanding awareness and putting forward practical solutions.
Among the results that we, but more importantly our members, helped achieve:
- VIA Rail's new $700 million five-year capital improvement plan, which will include rebuilding of locomotives and cars used on the Toronto-Vancouver Canadian and the Jasper-Prince George-Prince Rupert Skeena
- A second daily train between Vancouver, BC and Seattle, Washington, which enables same day through service to Portland, Oregon
- The saving of the Esquimalt and Nanaimo Railway (E&N), which is owned by the Island Corridor Foundation (ICF). We sit on the ICFs Rail Operators Liaison Committee.
- Revitalizing Vancouvers trolleybus network.
